The 2014 Train Project - How You Can Help
Vision Statement: "By 2025, our distinctive ability to integrate historic preservation work, audience-centered interpretation, and edutainment will have positioned the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District as the premier industrial railroad heritage museum in America's Hearland Region."
To make progress towards this vision, one of the major project's we are launching this spring is the construction of a miniature railroad line that will offer an entertaining railway ride and move people around our museum campus. The miniature railroad will be more than a train ride. It will be an interactive exhibit on train travel.
You now have a golden opportunity to be a part of this new project. Your donation will help construct and lay the track for the railroad line.
It will take 6336 ties, 31,680 spikes, along with 15,840 linear feet of rail to construct the railroad track for the Sioux City & Dakota Grand Scale Railroad. Those materials will cost anywhere from $0.30 to $10.00 each.
While this track laying project will require a huge quantity of materials, they are on the Adoption List for individuals like you who are willing to make smaller but "ever so important" general donations to build the miniature railroad line.
All donors to the 2014 Adopt a Train Project Program will be acknowledged on a display board to be erected at the main station stop of the Sioux City & Dakota Railroad.
What is the Train Project?
The Siouxland Historical Railroad Association intends to construct a Miniature Railroad at its Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District location in Sioux City. The Miniature Railroad will feature a classic-style, 3-inch scale, miniature park train that will run on a 1.5-mile rail line constructed
of 15-inch gauge tracks.
This miniature railroad will be capable of running a three-car train set. The train set will consist of a vintage reproduction of the historic F-7 diesel locomotive with a four motor drive system and phoenix sound, two 12-passenger economy coaches, and a 12-passenger observation car. The F-7 style locomotive was a signature diesel locomotive type that defined treamlined railroad passenger service in and out of Sioux City, as well as cross the nation, during the tmeframe between 1940 and 1972.
What are the Train Project's Purpose and Benefits?
- Serves as a rail shuttle system to provide greater public accessibility and connectivity between the parking lot, historic buildings, structures and public areas within the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District.
- Provides alternative transportation choices to the interpretive walking trails, emphasizing the railway mode as an option for individuals with disabilities, older adults, and families with young children.
- Furnishes a railroad network that creates a high quality railway ride experience for children and their families visiting the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District.
- Creates railroad experiences that share the historic, scenic, natural, and recreational significance of the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District.
Who will build the railroad and run the train?
The locomotive and accompanying passenger cars are being custom-built by Swannee River Locomotive Company, a Lufkin, Texas-based company specializing in the production of grand scale locomotives and rolling stock for parks, zoos and museums. The locomotive and train set will feature the historical paint livery of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific.
The track for the rail line will be built, layed and assembled by volunteers and other community members. It will take approximately two years to built the rail line. Along with the track, there will be three station shops featuring scaled buildings and structures to help illustrate train travel between towns.
