Manna Project International is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that utilizes the passions and energy of young people to empower developing international communities through hands on learning and service. MPI utilizes a community-based approach to development by working within and alongside international communities. MPI places an emphasis on holisitic development in recognition of the multi-faceted challenges these communities face. Year-long volunteers learn about the community needs and work to empower local institutions in two main sites: Managua, Nicaragua and Quito, Ecuador. MPI's work has led to a variety of successes including the recent construction of a library and teen center in their Ecuador site. All the money raised for this marathon will go towards further implementing projects at MPI's two main sites. Get more information at mannaproject.org!
I have worked with MPI for the last three years and currently serve as the Duke Chapter President. Over the course of these three years, we will have sent about forty students to these sites to implement or participate in a variety of projects, ranging from after school health education to women's exercise class. Our chapter helped open the Library/Teen Center last March and I was fortunate enough to work in the library this last summer. I helped teach English and Art classes as well as worked with Christian Anamisi, a local social entrepreneur, to help start a sustainable agricultural class for kids in the area.
