We are dedicated to saving these birds from extinction. Please help us today!
Belize Bird Rescue began in 2004 and since then we have rehabilitated and released over 50 parrots, victims of the illegal but ongoing pet trade. All parrot species in Belize are victims of the pet trade, but one particular parrot is highly sought after – its very name “oratrix” means “she who talks”. And my, she certainly does have a story to tell!
According to international estimates, the Yellow-headed Parrot (Amazona oratrix belizensis) is listed as endangered, with less than 600 birds remaining in the wild. It has suffered a population decline of 90% since 1974, and which is expected to continue.
Belize Bird Rescue is dedicated to saving these birds and is collaborating with the World Parrot Trust on a captive breeding and release programme that has been sanctioned by the Belize Forestry Department. Funds raised for this program will be used to:
Alongside the yellow-head programme, we will continue to rehabilitate as many ex-captives as possible, beautifully house the non-releasable birds and use them for our education programme, and of course, continue to speak out for those whose voices are seldom heard or understood.
Please help us save the Oratrix today.
