Your money will go the several feeding centers located in a refugee camp in Managua, Nicaragua called Nueva Vida.

My name is Emily and I am a student at Virginia Tech. With the Nicaraguan Orphan Fund at Tech I travelled along with about 50 other students to Managua, Nicaragua for the past two spring breaks. We spend time building relationships with the children and also try to send as much monetary support as we can throughout the year when we can't be there spending time with them.

The definition of compassion is simply this: to suffer with. For 5 days, VT Hokies are committing to live out compassion in our daily lives, and we are asking for your support. The Nicaraguan Orphan Fund (NOF) is a non-profit, university-affiliated organization which is targeted to combat poverty and offer hope to orphans and children in the midst of need. During the week of April 5th- April 9th, a group of VT NOF students are committing to model their diets after so many of the children we have come to know, love and serve. Right now 27% of the Nicaraguan population is malnourished, with the most severely affected being children. For one week, a team of students will commit to eat a diet of only rice and beans, the basic diet of the malnourished Nicaraguan child, in order to spend a week in Blacksburg really “suffering with.” During this time, we will be working to raise awareness and funds to feed the children of Nueva Vida and support the efforts of the VT Nicaraguan Orphan Fund.

During the past Spring Break, 44 VT students spent a week working in the Nicaragua community of Nueva Vida. Nueva Vida, meaning “New Life” in English, is the name of an urban slum in the outskirts of the capital city of Managua. It is a community where thousands of refugees settled after a series of natural disasters displaced those inhabiting significant portions of Nicaragua’s coasts, such as the devastating Hurricane Mitch in 1998. This is an area struggling with issues of extreme poverty, unemployment, violence, lack of education and lack of health care due to its rapid growth and lack of support. Unfortunately, the poverty in this community often affects the children the hardest. However, there exists a beacon of hope in the Nueva Vida “comedor” (“feeding center”). The center feeds a nutritious meal to over 300 children five days a week, making it the largest and most productive feeding center in the community. The center also provides employment and an important meeting place for the residents. For the past 4 years, VTNOF has partnered with the children of Nueva Vida as well as 2 other orphanage locations to empower and equip the children to realize their innate value and fulfill their potential. The funds raised during The Compassion Diet will supply operation costs for the center which is playing a vital role to meet these children’s most desperate physical needs.

We are asking that you stand by our side through your support as we dedicate this week to compassionately remembering the children that have touched our lives. Thank you for your sponsorship of our week and your interest in the lives of these children.

My time in Nicaragua has really changed my life. I will never forget the love and hope the children had in their hearts. They changed me more than i could ever help them. I appreciate how blessed I am to not have to worry about having shoes to go to school in or a meal to eat everyday. Your support would be greatly appreciated!
