All donations will go directly to children in the Nicaraguan community of Nueva Vida to help them have at least one meal everyday.
My name is Amanda and I am a student at Virginia Tech. Through the Nicaraguan Orphan Fund at Tech I traveled, along with 43 other students, to Nicaragua this past spring break. We spent most of our time with the people and children living in the refugee camp, Nueva Vida (new life) that was temporarily built after Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
For 5 days, VT Hokies are committing to live out compassion in our daily lives, and we are asking for your support in us suffering with our new friends. The Nicaraguan Orphan Fund (NOF) is a non-profit, university-affiliated organization which is targeted to combat poverty and offer hope to orphans and children in the midst of need. During the week of April 5th- April 9th, a group of VT NOF students are committing to model their diets after so many of the children we have come to know, love and serve. Right now 27% of the Nicaraguan population is malnourished, with the most severely affected being children. For one week, a team of students will commit to eat a diet of only rice and beans, the basic diet of the malnourished Nicaraguan child, in order to spend a week in Blacksburg really “suffering with.” During this time, we will be working to raise awareness and funds to feed the children of Nueva Vida and support the efforts of the VT Nicaraguan Orphan Fund.
Your money will be going to an area of extreme poverty, lack of health care, unemployment, violence, and hunger. This suffering often hits the children of Nueva Vida the hardest and money already donated is helping to support feeding centers to support the children. These feeding centers are a glimmer of hope in this community and feed about 300 children once a day 5 days a week. This one meal is often the only meal that child will get all day. Your money will provide operating costs for the centers which are so important to the daily lives of the children I spent an entire week with who taught me so much.
We are asking for your support in us dedicating our week to help this community that touched our lives.
My time in Nicaragua really has changed my life. I will never forget the faces of these children and the hope that we helped to instill in them. I have grown to become much more appreciative of the life that I am blessed to lead and all the opportunities that I have. Your support will not go unnoticed, I will personally appreciate it more than you know!
Thank you so much for your sponsorship in this week of compassion!
