The Advocates for Human Rights

The Advocates for Human Rights is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental organization whose mission is to implement international human rights standards to promote civil society and reinforce the rule of law. We believe that every person has a part to play in building the human rights movement and we engage hundreds of volunteers every year in hands-on human rights work, leveraging every dollar spent three to five times.

In 2011, The Advocates’ staff and volunteer attorneys won asylum in the United States for people from around the world who were fleeing persecution. A few of these people are:

• A Coptic Christian from Egypt who was kidnapped and threatened with forced conversion.
• A young gay man from Yemen who feared persecution due to his sexual orientation.
• A Tibetan woman from Nepal who experienced abuse and sexual assault before seeking asylum in the United States, where she is now an advocate for women’s human rights.

The Advocates also:

• Educates children, parents, teachers and communities about human rights.
• Works with partner groups in Minnesota and worldwide on law reform to ensure that the law protects women and girls from violence.
• Provides a free education to hundreds of children in Nepal through the Sankhu-Palubari Community School—giving needy children an alternative to child labor.
• Promotes human rights through international justice mechanisms and develops practical strategies to assist post-conflict countries in moving toward peace and accountability.
• Opposes the death penalty through advocacy and education.
• Helps communities become more welcoming to refugees and immigrants.
