Tevel b’Tzedek engages Israelis and diaspora Jews in the urgent issues of global poverty, marginalization and environmental devastation.
Tevel b’Tzedek is based on the following axioms:
In our increasingly globalizing world, we all share responsibility for the fate of the poorest and most vulnerable people and for the future of the planet and its ecosystem.
It is unacceptable ethically and spiritually that hundreds of millions of people in the world do not have enough food, clean water, sanitation, adequate shelter, healthcare, education, or basic human rights. This situation can and must be changed!
The Jewish people have a right and a duty at this critical time in history, to participate in re-visioning and recreating the world, through thought, words, and deed, in order to create a more just and beautiful future for humanity. Our traditional sources contain important wisdom that can illuminate crucial issues and can guide us as we seek a path to tikkun olam—fixing the world.
Collaboration between Israeli and Diaspora Jews in working for social and environmental justice in the developing world will invigorate Jewish peoplehood, strengthen Israel and greatly benefit impoverished peoples.
Work in the developing world must be approached with humility; we come with the desire to learn from those who we also intend to help, and the knowledge that changing the world means changing our own societies and the way we think and live as much as it means aiding the poor in the developing world.
