Temple Jacob, a small historic synagogue in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, needs your help!
Temple Jacob in Hancock, Michigan, the oldest continuously active Jewish House of Worship in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the only active synagogue in Michigan listed in the National Historic Register, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year; and it needs your help to survive!
At a time when many small synagogues have closed their doors and dispersed their sacred artifacts due to declining membership, Temple Jacob continues to thrive. This active congregation offers High Holiday services, Passover Seders, Torah study, Sukkot and TuB’Shvat celebrations, Jewish summer camp scholarships, and more. This historic structure is maintained by the membership contributions of its small local Reform congregation and by the continued generosity of a small group of friends. However, membership dues do not provide for preservation.
As a result, Temple Jacob is in need of additional financial support. The simple but elegant brick structure, with its distinctive copper dome and magnificent stained glass windows, is facing structural issues including work on the sandstone foundation, cement work on the retaining walls and sidewalks, and roof repairs; which, if neglected, will threaten its survival. Time and the elements, if left to their devices, will destroy this landmark structure which previous generations of Jewish families worked so hard to build and maintain.
Our goal for the Centennial is to bring the Temple Jacob Preservation Fund to a level of $100,000 by raising an additional $75,000 to augment the balance of $25,000 remaining in the Temple Jacob Preservation Trust which was established prior to Temple Jacob’s 75th anniversary in 1986. Our goal, if met, will allow us to establish an income-producing fund that will meet the immediate needs for repair and will also create a secure financial base for Temple Jacob for the next generation. Please help us preserve Temple Jacob so that generations to come, of members and visitors alike, may benefit as we have from its presence.
All contributions of $250 or more will be recognized on a permanet donor wall to be mounted in the entrance to the Sanctuary.
All donors of $1000 or more will have the opportunity to have a pew in the sactuary dedicated to honor the memory of a loved one or to commemorate a special occasion.
We welcome any and all contributions.
