Donate to support finding cures for childhood brain tumors and stand with heroes like Alex as they fight their tumors.

In September of 2011, Alex was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive brain tumor. He underwent brain surgery and is currently going through an aggressive chemo and radiation treatment program that will last 12 months. Through all of this, he maintains a positive outlook and is continuing to progress through High School.

Alex's father is a good friend of mine and every time I ask how the family is doing, I am almost brought to tears by listening to their outlook and resolve. I was already planning on running Ironman Arizona 2012 on November 18, 2012 when I read an article about athletes raising money for charities. I immediately asked Alejandro if I could raise money for the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation in Alex's name. I am honored that I will cover my 140.6 miles as Team Alex.

With a small contribution, you can stand beside heroes like Alex in their fight against childhood brain tumors. Please pass this along to anyone you know that might support the cause.

If you want to join the team and raise money for this charity leading up to your race, please email me at russell.mckelvey@yahoo.com

Anyone who wants to run/swim/bike and Ironman already has my respect. He or she earns even more when the person does it not only for personal pride, but for a much larger and meaningful cause. This story, this competitor, this family – and certainly Alex – has my upmost admiration and I’m honored to “know” them through this cause. GO TEAM ALEX!

Below is the type of research that donations to CBTF benefit. Alex, I see you are following the fundraser here, thank you for handling this so remarkebly and for letting us raise awareness and money for CBTF in your name. I look forward to meeting you soon. When I am ready to design my race jersey, I hope you can help me. My wife and I were talking about ways to boost the fundraiser, we found a guide online that has steps for organizing a Battle of the Bands competition. Any thoughts from fans of Team Alex? ALEX STRONG!

From Alex's Blog: Alex will start an Avastin trial this Thursday.Avastin inhibits the growth of new blood cells and has been shown to be a promising drug for radiation necrosis. It seems to be a much better alternative than steroids. The only drawback is that it can cause clotting.

Alex had am MRI the other day and found out that tumor is 5-10% bigger. The change was very subtle. Alex and his family are taking it as good news from the perspective that Alex hasn’t had any substantial chemotherapy for about a month and a half. If this was as aggressive as originally thought would have seen far more growth. Alex's body is having a hard time with teh chemo, so the doctor wants to try a new procedure that targets just the tumor. I am attaching a link to this about a similar procedure. Donations to The Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation help fund research that leads to these cures. Alex Strong!

Thank you so much for raising money for the childhood tumor foundation in honor of Alex! We are touched by the compassion of you and your donors. Throughout this experience we have been surprised and delighted by the goodness of peple during the toughest period of our lives. The current treatment for cancer is painful and cruel. Our hope is this organization can come up with a targeted therapy that will only go after the tumor with fewer side effects. Thank you all for donating and bringing attention to an under funded sector of cancer research.

Alex has healed up enough so that the doctor wants to start chemo back up. Today’s appointment showed that his platelets are still low but not low enough to stop chemo any further. The other concern was Alex’s liver. His bilrubin was high and they were afraid that it was reacting to the IV nutrition he gets.
