Boston Debate League(BDL)

The Boston Debate League’s programming is unique among the city’s after-school and other youth development programs. They work with middle and high school students in a way that blends competition and fun with rigorous academic work. While many programs aim only to keep teens safe and occupied in the afternoon, debate provides an engaging, educational opportunity that actively cultivates social and academic skills. The BDL presents debate in a variety of ways so as to reach a broad spectrum of students, from those already highly achieving to those who are off-track academically and at risk of dropping out.

What we observed

We had the opportunity to attend a debate at East Boston High School. We observed 3 different debates---from 1st year debaters to ‘wily veterans’. Looking at the spectrum gave one a very positive feel for the impact the 4 year program would have on a student’s skills and confidence.

We next visited the organizer’s table—where one recognizes the size of the event, sees what a judge would submit, and how the 3 day competition would be orchestrated. It is impressive.

We were struck by the commitment of the judges, BDL personnel and importantly the students. Try to remember back to your high school days---consider making a decision to commit Friday evening, all day Saturday and for some Sunday to this kind of academic effort. We found that level of commitment impressive and meaningful when assessing how this program will impact these students lives. It really will.

We are proud to be representing BDL and determined to keep on our training program; this visit was very helpful in reaffirming that commitment.
