Supporting the Impoverished Elderly in Moscow
A project of THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER WASHINGTON INC
Hesed Welfare Centers provide welfare services for Jews in Moscow, including food packages, medical supplies and winter relief.
The world has been gripped by a harsh economic crisis, which is having catastrophic consequences in the former Soviet Union. The Russian economy has been ripped to shreds by the global economic crisis. This is compounded by fears after the war with Georgia, and the dramatic fall of the price of oil. The elderly Jews of Moscow are among the helpless victims of this economic meltdown and sharply rising inflation. Food prices and medicines, for example, have risen 30% in a year.
This program reaches out to a vulnerable, often forgotten population. In addition to providing basic services, this porgram offers hope and provides dignity for the recipients. These humanitarian services are a vital lifeline to thousands of destitute elderly Jews.
