Today our heroes are being asked to do more with less, and it is putting their lives at risk. What are you willing to do to help?
Everyday across America people wake up in the morning, get ready for work, and kiss their loved ones goodbye without ever giving a second thought to the safety they enjoy each day as they think about plans after work. There are however, a group of people across America who wake up each day, get ready for work, and kiss their loved ones goodbye – and always think “God please do not let this be the last kiss” as they go to work never knowing whether or not they will be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice. To give their life so that others may be safe and secure.
People like 35 year old Police Officer Steven Levy who left for work on October 21, 1999 after kissing his wife and two children – ages 2 and 5 goodbye for the last time. Officer Levy never made it home after his shift. While responding to a domestic disturbance call, Officer Levy was shot in the head and killed. His sacrifice was headline news for weeks and there were hundreds at his funeral. Not many people besides those who knew him remember the tragedy today and 2,252 police officers have been killed since then but Officer Levy’s wife never saw him again and his children grew up without their father’s support.
We owe it to Police Officer Levy’s children – and the thousands of others like them – to make sure we look after them to honor the way their father looked after us. We, as a community have a debt to Officer Levy that can never be repaid. A debt that is owed to thousands of Police Officers, Firefighters, EMS Responders, and Military Soldiers that we must remember to honor as we go safely about our lives. We have a duty to make sure their children have an opportunity for an education – without the associated financial worries – so that our fallen heroes can rest in peace as they look down upon us, knowing that their children are being looked after.
