After starting Student United Way@Purdue this year, I can't wait to show them what it means to give up our spring break to help new orleans!

After my first eye-opening trip to Biloxi, Mississippi with Alternative Spring Break last year. I came back to West Lafayette and just couldn't wait to do more to help, not only with the destruction on the Gulf Coast, but in my own community as well. I had such a wonderful experience, I wanted to share it with people at my school and home. So, I started the first ever Student United Way at Purdue University. We are so new on campus we are still learning the ropes but can't wait for our trip to St Bernard Parish, Louisiana! I will be leading a group of 16 college students in New Orleans to help the St Bernard Project rebuild their community still damaged after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. This year, we are on our own down there. We have to rent a van to get us to and from the job site and the rental alone will cost around $1000. We also need to pay for food, lodging, gas, and hopefully a chance to take an eye opening tour of the devastation still present in New Orleans after a day on the job site! We need all the help we can get because this trip is completely up to us to fund. Most student organizations have other means of finances, we have not been around quite long enough for this- but we do know what we want and that is to help! We will be working with the St. Bernard Project in St Bernard Parish, LA to rebuild homes still damaged from Hurricanes nearly 5 years ago. I can't wait for everyone on my team to finally understand the passion that I have for this club, and this cause. You really don't understand fully until you feel that change within you while you are there- and that is something you cannot put a value on. I know that the recent destruction in Haiti and this troubling economy has put an added pressure on all of us. While we are working to help those in Haiti we must not forget about those in our own country still suffering 5 years later. Please help in whatever way you can to make this dream possible for us!! :)

Thank you SO much :)
