Support Education in Haiti with Books for Schools

Summary

International Action will provide desperately needed Creole language books to children in Haiti. 3,000 books have already been provided to children in Cite Soleil, the poorest slum in the country. Many of these kids have never had an opportunity to read even a single book. With your help, we can reach more.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Only 53% of people in Haiti can read and write. According to the Library of Congress, Federal Research Division, the country, “faces severe shortages in educational supplies.” Without these materials, the youth of Haiti will be unable to build a better future for themselves and their country.

How will this project solve this problem?

We will purchase 1,500 books in Haitian Creole at a cost of $6,000. We will then distribute these books to children in schools and orphanages in and around Port-au-Prince. The books are given directly to the children because many schools cannot provide a library. These books will go a long way toward giving Haitian children the opportunity to learn to read.

Potential Long Term Impact

We are providing resources that will allow many children in Haiti to further their education. In combination with our campaign for clean water in schools and de-worming project, the potential to make a difference in Haiti’s education system, and thereby in the future of the country, is huge.
