Summer Festivals of Learning - New York City
A project of All Together in Dignity Fourth World Movement
The young people who grew up doing Street Library in under-resourced NYC neighborhoods want to give back. You can support their initiative.
“My experience with the Fourth World Movement and Street Library is they have been there for me when I need help. They help me to understand how the world is and what people go through.”
-Christopher (17), who grew up going to Street Library in East New York
“I think the next step in Street Library would be to make activities for the older kids so that they will be interested in what we do [to end poverty]. Keep them off the streets.”
-Malcom (14), who grew up going to Street Library in East Bushwick
Malcom and Christopher are part of a long history of children from low-income communities in New York City who have had the opportunity to participate in reading, exploration, and art projects through ATD Fourth World Movement’s Street Library program. This summer, they are part of a group of young people helping plan and facilitate similar programs in their own neighborhoods. Our Street Festivals of Learning will involve the whole community in providing four days of these activities for children, and leadership opportunities for young adults. Set for late August in two under-resourced communities in Brooklyn where Fourth World Movement has a long and active presence, the festivals will enrich the neighborhood children’s summer while strengthening the entire community.
Already, young adults who grew up participating in Street Libraries throughout New York are preparing workshops like silk-screening and dance, which they will teach the younger members of their community during the Street Festivals of Learning. This is a fantastic opportunity for the young people to be positive role models and learn new skills, and the festivals will expose children to reading activities and arts to which they would otherwise have limited access. To support the Street Festivals of Learning is to support the entire community.
We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to have a place in his community. We believe every child should have the chance to learn from the adults around him or her. By donating to the Summer Street Festival of Learning, you can help bring the joy, growth, and fun of true community to the children of the New York City.
