This award has been given by University of Illinois McKinley Health Center (in honor of Stevie) to deserving students every year since 1997.
When Stevie passed away at the young age of 30, he was working on obtaining his second Ph.D. from University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign); and, he also served as UI McKinley Health Center’s Assistant Coordinator of the Special Populations Health Program, which targets minority Americans, international students and those with disabilities. He began his undergraduate degree at U of I in 1985, earning a bachelor of science degree in Biology. He completed a master’s degree in Immunology, and a doctoral degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. When he passed, he was working on a second doctoral degree in science education.
