Contribute today to help us build a community garden in Southwest DC!
Lansburgh Park is a historic park in Southwest DC with great untapped potential. So a group of Southwest residents have set out to build a community garden in the park, to invite the diverse Southwest neighborhood to connect and collaborate around the cultivation of fresh food.
Your donation will allow us to buy the tools and supplies needed to build a unique space for neighborhood growth.
The garden will include individual plots as well as a large communal plot that will be opened up to community farming, training, and education efforts. The communal plot will be designed in an open garden style, featuring tables, benches, and chairs to invite lingering, connecting, and planning.
Community garden members will run a summer youth program for students attending neighboring schools to learn about where fresh produce comes from and how it is cultivated. For many children in the neighborhood, such activities will be a fundamental learning experience.
Growing Fresh Produce
The garden will grow seasonal fruits and vegetables to be consumed by Southwest DC residents. As veteran gardeners well know, growing one’s own produce can save households large sums of money on their grocery bills. Growing fruits and vegetables from the ground also gives local residents more control over where their food comes from and greater oversight of how it is grown and harvested. The garden will emphasize strictly organic gardening practices that preserve the soil, environment, and surrounding wildlife for future generations.
Please contribute so we can build this garden!
This community garden requires the participation of the neighborhood in order to thrive. As construction and operations begin, the garden will need material for fencing, a tool shed, a hose and hose cart, wood chips, soil, lumber for raised beds, and gardening tools.
We appreciate your contribution, which will be put to good use to support construction and activities!
