Helps government, nonprofit, education, and corporate entities use mapping technologies and share geographic data for the public good.
Background: SharedGeo was founded in September 2008 as a way to advance the use of mapping technologies and share geographic data in support of disaster response and relief operations in the United States. Since that time, SharedGeo has become engaged in a wide variety of related activities - including environmental, Public Safety and similar efforts that benefit the common good.
Issue: Modern electronic mapping systems and related technologies are powerful tools that can do a great deal of good for humanity. Unfortunately, in many cases governments, public service organizations, and even corporations have been slow to embrace the exceptionally fast pace of advances in these capabilities. As a result, human suffering and loss of life needless occur - particularly during disasters - because Decision Makers do not have a cohesive "big picture" understanding of circumstances. SharedGeo is dedicated to correcting this problem through the numerous ways it works to advance understanding and use of mapping technologies, and by working to increase the sharing of geographic data for the benefit of all.
