Samaritan's Purse teams are beginning to deliver relief supplies to communities that have received little or no help
Samaritan's Purse teams bringing relief to earthquake victims in Haiti are beginning to work in remote areas outside Port-au-Prince where the need is tremendous, but no help has yet arrived.
After assessing needs and meeting with church leaders, they are providing emergency supplies in areas devastated by the earthquake between Leogane and Petit Goave.
Samaritan's Purse sent program managers and water engineers to set up a base of operations in Petit Goave, a small town five miles from the epicenter of the earthquake where at least 500 people died. They sent in an initial truck load of shelter materials, blankets, and hygiene kits, and distributed the materials through 30 local churches to people with the greatest needs.
Their water engineers installed a water treatment system at the Blue Ridge Children’s Home in Leogane, and they left some bags of rice, beans, and corn for the children.
In Port-au-Prince, Samaritan's Purse has established a working relationship with a large church in Cite Soleil, the poorest area of Haiti. It is also known to be the most violent place in the country, but their team was able to walk through to assess needs and meet residents without any problem.
Relief items distributed by Samaritan's Purse to date include:
• 889 Hygiene Kits
• 480 Solar Flashlights
• 1,421 Blankets
• 617 Shelter Kits
• 102 Water Purification Kits
• 550 Pounds of Food to Orphanages
