Help educate the youth and adolescent around the world about binge drinking and alcohol poisoning.

How Did Stop Alcohol Deaths (S.A.D.) Begin?

On January 26, 2010, our beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, granddaughter Kristine Polastre passed away due to acute alcohol poisoning. It was a sudden and devastating loss. When we would tell people how Kristine died, we would usually get a puzzled look, and a response that they never really thought you could die from alcohol, other than drunk driving. We knew that we had to tell her story, so that we could educate the youth and adolescent around the world about how binge drinking can result in alcohol poisoning, and that you can still be "cool" by drinking responsibly. Our hopes is that we can help save lives, so that another family never has to experience the loss that we are constantly feeling.

What is S.A.D.?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of alcohol-induced deaths, excluding accidents and homicides, is 79,000 in the United States. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report indicating that 2.5-million people around the world die of alcohol-related deaths. Of those, the majority are children and women. We want to change this statistic, so that no family has to feel the pain of losing a loved one.

What Are You Trying to Achieve?

Our major goal is to educate the world about this socially-accepted silent killer. We are committed in teaching people the signs to look out for, what to do if someone is suffering from alcohol poisoning, and what happens to their bodies. Alcohol poisoning can happen to anyone, be it if he/she is an alcoholic or not. 13 drinks in an hour’s time can cause a person’s body to shut down. Even if you do not die, you could end up with other types of damage (brain, liver, etc.) to your body. You can help by being aware.

Yesterday at church, the pastor was discussing what is a rich life. He said something that stuck in my mind. He said that people always say that they want to live a happy life, but you should be wanting a rich and meaningful life. Happiness is an effect of that. I never thought about it that way. I’m always saying that I’m striving to be happy, but what am I doing to do that? What is my passion? What is my reason for living? The first thing that popped into my head is helping others. If I can help one person live a better life, then I will feel that my life had meaning. This made me know that my efforts to bring awareness to binge drinking is my reason for living. I know that our little organization can make someone’s life rich and meaningful.

We are at the end of Alcohol Awareness Month. It is a good time to think about what alcohol abuse means to you. Alcohol abuse can mean different things. It can be underage drinking, binge drinking, drunk driving, alcoholism, and drinking unsafe alcohols, like hand sanitizers. Even if you don't want to admit it, you or someone you know has practiced one of these types of alcohol abuse. It is everyone's issue, not just people who are suffering from alcoholism, so that is the first step to changing your mindset and behavior. If that happens, then you can help change someone else's. http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=9c6046eae2101561114552f64&id=d30d2c507d

Today is the second anniversary of my sister's passing, and the reason I started SAD. It will always be a tough day for us, but it's also a reminder that our cause is one that can potentially save lives.

The Centers of Disease and Prevention Control (CDC) have released a new fact sheet today showing that more than 38 million Americans binge drink four or times a month, consuming an average of eight drinks at a time. Binge drinking is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that about 80,000 deaths in the US can be associated to binge drinking. People tend to think that people who binge drink are alcoholics. In actuality, they usually are not. http://stopalcoholdeaths.com/2012/01/new-cdc-report-shows-more-than-38-million-american-binge-drink-4-or-more-times-a-month/

What I'm thankful for? Having been able to have my sister, an amazing human being in my life even if it was for a short while. It’s something that many people around the world are not able to say. I am also thankful to have known my cousin Jonathan and aunt Gladys. They were all my favorite people, and I learned from each of them. Thank you so much for having been in my life. Today is “Wear Red Day” at schools all over... Today is “Wear Red Day” at schools all over the country. My kids put on their red shirts without me having to remind them because they knew that it was in honor of their aunt Kristine who died of alcohol poisoning. Their schools sent red ribbons for parents to wear or to put on their cars. I tied the two ribbons on my car to show that I support the fight against alcohol and drug abuse. Wear red and tie the ribbon on your car antennae today!

This past Saturday night after leaving my friend's birthday party, I saw a girl on the side of the street drooped down while her friends were trying to wake her. We asked if she was ok. Her friends said she drank way too much alcohol. We gave them water, and I told them to take her to the hospital. You can have a good time without getting to that point. Make a conscious effort to tell yourself: Two drinks max
