Shoes: $100. Registration fee: $300. Helping a BDL debater improve confidence, communication, & college preparedness: priceless.

That's how you do it! That's the way you debate! --Frank the Tank

In the movie Old School, Frank the Tank defeated James Carville with a cogent, articulate argument about the debate resolution: "What is your position on the role of government in supporting innovation in the field of biotechnology?" Before experiencing the Boston Debate League (BDL), many of my students at the Josiah Quincy Upper School would have rather run 26.2 miles than debate such a question in front of judges.

Fast forward to 2010: Many JQUS debaters have gone from terrified to speak in front of their classes to confident, outspoken and articulate. Many have gone from being satisfied with Cs and Ds to taking ownership of their learning and aiming to achieve their full potential.

All have improved their ability to:

  • advocate for themselves
  • analyze complex texts
  • write strong arguments
  • work in teams
  • and communicate.

The BDL has been amazing for students throughout Boston Public Schools. Involvement in debate has helped keep students on track to graduate, improve their GPAs, and most of all, prepare them to succeed in college. Getting them to the stage to receive a diploma is only the first step. Making sure they have the analytical and interpersonal skills necessary to manage their time, work well with others, study for exams, and write term papers is even more important.

As a teacher, I've also gained much from the BDL. Like my students, I never thought I would debate in front of my peers. Through BDL's Debate Across the Curriculum (DAC) training, I learned how to incorporate debate into my math lessons...starting by debating other teachers. Using DAC has made math more engaging for my students and given them new ways to delve deeper into content.

Your donations are the BDL's primary source for tournaments, transportation, materials, and coaching. Thanks so much for your generosity!
