About 14 years ago, when Abby's condition was first diagnosed, not many people had heard of Rett syndrome, a genetic condition that deprives girls of speech, disrupts their cognition and leaves them with many other impairments. Today, scientists and others are working hard on finding ways to undo the damage Rett syndrome causes and help these girls and women find ways to communicate, maintain mobility and otherwise lead fuller lives.
