Raising funds for rag-pickers and awareness for Waste Ventures.
“I am very proud to be a rag picker; we keep you healthy” said Jai Prakash Choudhary in a recent newspiece on Rag pickers and I couldn’t agree more. India is growing and so is India’s trash but fortunately saviour rag-pickers (an estimated 1.7 million) are around. These heroes neither wear capes nor they have superpowers and gadgets as Superman or Batman do. Rather, in urban India’s informal and unorganised waste management sector what they do day in day out by putting their lives and families at stake is what is keeping India shining. In an effort to give these heroes their due Waste Ventures, a social enterprise, is working towards social and economic upliftment of rag pickers while also ensuring a better environment.
Having been brought up with values like ‘Cleanliness is Godliness’, I thought it was time to salute these real gods of cleaning. A better way could’ve been to join Waste Ventures but due to concerns with my mother’s health things didn’t work out. Taking this as an opportunity, I’ll be running Mumbai Marathon on 20th January, 2013 while raising funds and awareness about rag pickers and Waste Ventures.
With just weeks to the race day, the stacks are surely lined-up against me both in terms of training and fund-raising but I’m confident that I’ll draw inspiration from rag pickers’ daily heroics and my mom’s recovery. Combined with some marathon experience (Manchester City – 2009, Philadelphia – 2010 and London – 2012), I’m sure I can survive and psych out Tiffany Talsma. You’re welcome to join and inspire me on this journey by helping us raise $1,000 and/or spread the message.
