In lieu of Christmas presents for me, please help me give back to Austin Pets Alive this year.
My dear friends and family,
Please help me raise money for Austin Pets Alive, an amazing pet rescue. Through the tireless efforts of their volunteers, they have managed to turn Austin into a no kill city and are now teaching their successful model to other cities. They have also given me so much personally. I started following APA on facebook when I heard about their heroic animal rescue efforts during the Texas wildfires. October was a difficult month for me. It was the 15th anniversary of my mom's death, and we had just lost our beloved dog Morris a couple of months ago, also to cancer. He was our perfect pup, and I thought I would never want another dog. But I got to look at puppy pictures on APA's site, and lived vicariously through the happy adoption stories, remembering how we adopted Morris only nine short years ago. Then I discovered a family of puppies at the Bastrop pound and, worried about their fate, contacted many rescues, pleading to take them in, but all were full. Only APA volunteer Patty stayed in email contact with me. On the exact day of the anniversary of my mom's death, which was a very difficult day for me, Patty gave me the good news: APA was driving to Bastrop to save the litter of puppies. I went from being weighed down by my grief and worry to feeling hopeful and optimistic again. And then it all came full circle when we went to an APA adoption day to say goodbye to the Bastrop puppies, and met and fell in love with Rufus, whom APA had saved from an area kill shelter where he was out of time.
I am raising the money in honor of my mom Gerda, who taught me to love all animals, and of my sweet dog Morris, who will always be in my heart. I am dedicating this fundraiser to Patty, the amazing APA volunteer who helped me through my grief and turned it into hope and joy.
Thank you with all my heart.
