I'm riding in the 2012 Gears for Good Annual Fundraiser to support the HFA. The funds I raise will help individuals with hemophilia.
I'm a happily married daddy who writes books. I was born with Hemophilia type A and I'm also one of the longest surviving HIV+ people in the universe. In addition, I'm a published author, and my autobiography, "Survivor: One Man's Battle with HIV, Hemophilia, and Hepatitis C" details my life story in all of it's gory details. I also attempt to inspire via my blog http://hivlongevity.com
Hemophilia is a rare bleeding disorder affecting approximately 20,000 individuals across the country. The 1980's brought a decimating disease in AIDS, killing 5,000 Americans with hemophilia, leaving another 5,000 fighting to survive both diseases, while also carrying the finanacial burden of expensive drugs. There are many young families, with newly diagnosed children, overwhelmed by the exorbinant cost of Factor, the medicine used to stop a bleeding episode. Because so few people have this bleeding disorder, medicine needed to stop a "bleed" comes with a high price tag. As this population ages, arthritis begins to form in their joints. Most bleeding episodes occur within the joint, which then leads to long-term damage. Joint replacements are very common among these individuals. As you can see, the financial costs are significant. I know these are hard economic times, if we could all give just $10-15 each, we can make a huge impact on the lives of these families and individuals. Please consider donating and supporting this wonderful cause. I am working on a daily basis to raise awareness and support around hemophilia and associated blood disorders. Please help me, to help them! Thank you!!
