The Regal Swan Foundation supports research, education initiatives, habitat enhancement, supplemental feeding and other care for swans
In 1999, five researchers formed The Regal Swan research project with the focus for providing humane veterinary medical care for swans worldwide, specifically captive swans. During the course of their research, The Regal Swan's team of veterinarians, researchers, educators and other swan specialists pioneered the use of two vaccines to mitigate swan deaths due to Botulism and West Nile Virus; authored a book, Swan Keeper's Handbook: A Guide to the Care of Captive Swans, Krieger Publishing, Malabar, Florida, 2003; developed current best practices in humane veterinary medical care for swans; established blood chemistries, body temperatures, hormone levels and other relevant baselines for swan veterinarians; researched a protozoa that affects swans and humans through DNA Sequencing; researched the Pink Flamingo Syndrome affecting swans worldwide and implicated a specific bacteria for causing the syndrome. In 2007, The Regal Swan Foundation, Inc., was formed to continue research, education initiatives, habitat enhancement, supplemental feeding and other related care for swans. In addition to these initiatives, The Regal Swan Foundation, Inc., also began helping public facilities supplement their budgetary cuts through the donation of free annual swan veterinary medical exams, materials to enhance habitats and food.
For years, many cities and public facilities have maintained swan flocks to adorn their ponds and lakes. Due to current budgetary cuts, many captive swan flocks are now feeling these cuts with woefully inadequate humane veterinary medical care. The Regal Swan Foundation is working to change this practice.
