Partner with us as our dream becomes a reality. We will be joining Bright Hope in Samfya, Zambia as a nurse and leadership developer.
"Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible."
Francis of Assisi
For a long time, we have known that we are supposed to go to Africa – we just didn’t know exactly how or when. After a long search, we have finally found an organization that exhibits a passion for Africa through holistic development and local partnership: Bright Hope International. Bright Hope's mission is to help people who suffer extreme poverty to gain self-sufficiency, and to partner with communities to meet a variety of basic human needs, such as building wells for clean water, providing health care, education, and micro-finance loans.
Joel and I will be joining Bright Hope to work in healthcare and leadership development for its ministry in Samfya, Zambia. The small town of Samfya is located in a rural area in northeastern Zambia. Samfya faces more than its share of troubles. Two out of three people there live on less than a dollar a day; insufficient access to clean water and sanitation leads to a multitude of vicious diseases. Even limitations we may not often consider lead to hardship, such as the ubiquitous outdoor cooking fires that commonly make burn victims of small children. Limited economic opportunities trap families in a cycle of poverty, and inadequate health and social services leave basic human needs unmet.
Fortunately, Samfya is home to churches and remarkable individuals who have committed themselves to helping their community. Together with Bright Hope, they have developed a home-visit HIV/AIDS program that distributes medication and nutrition to bring quality of life to those facing this diagnosis. They administer microloan programs that give individuals the chance to start small businesses. The means for basic human needs and the opportunity to thrive are being provided. Joel and I are joining Bright Hope in that partnership.
What began as a dream for us has become a reality. We ask that you partner with us financially. Our assignment, which is to last for 12 months, is entirely unpaid. Fortunately, the total cost for travel, working visas, a Zambian nursing license and a year of living expenses for the two of us combined will only come to $20,000. Our goal is to reach 80% of our total fundraising needs within the next three months. Donations in any amount are much appreciated; they can be in the form of a one-time gift or in a pledge of monthly allotments. If you have any questions, we would love to chat with you over the phone or over a cup of coffee.
