We're celebrating Pro's 50 years of service to Upper Iowa University.
"Coach Pro showed me first hand that a great coach takes care of his players off the field. Doing a great job in the classroom and being a good person are more important than what happens during the game. He taught me about loyalty, pride, and repect."
- Rick Heller '86 (Head Coach: University of Iowa Baseball)
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Bill Prochaska’s graduation from Upper Iowa University. Pro’s commitment to integrity, education and athletic excellence is as strong today as it was when he stepped foot on the hardwood as a basketball player in 1960. The success of Pro’s athletes as well as the coaching tree that he has inspired is respected nationwide and is well rooted in the “Pride n’ Poise in Peacock style” (his original logo) that Upper Iowa University stands for today.
In our travels we’ve met players, coaches and students that know “Coach Pro.” We always hear that first and foremost, “Pro was a friend.” In his 31 years of coaching the Peacocks in basketball, baseball and golf, as well as being an Athletic Director, Division Chair for Education and full time Professor, Pro had an opportunity to touch the lives of hundreds of alumni and friends of UIU. We felt it was time to cement Pro’s legacy on the Fayette campus forever.
On October 26th we will be hosting “Bill Prochaska Night” as the Upper Iowa Peacock Football team faces off against Southwest Minnesota State at 6 p.m. A social will be held at Harms-Eischeid Stadium suites at 4 p.m. During halftime we would like to bring Pro onto the 50-yard line to honor his career and legacy.
Pro has often said that one of the most important things athletes can do is pass their knowledge down to others through coaching and teaching. Bill, Janet, Mike and Melissa are presenting the University with a lead gift to establish an annual scholarship in his name to help create the next wave of great coaches and teachers from Upper Iowa. This scholarship would go to a coaching/teaching major who plans on continuing their career in education. We’d also like to honor his legacy in the new Upper Iowa weight room by chronicling his 31 years of service to UIU and the players and teams he led, with a custom wall art piece.
Help us honor Pro on October 26 with your attendance. If you would like to let Pro know about the impact he’s had on your life, please send a note to the address below. We look forward to seeing you on his special night. Any contributions to either of the above tributes would be greatly appreciated.
