Harvard women’s basketball hosts its fifth annual Play4Kay game Saturday, February 11th against Princeton.
The Harvard women’s basketball team will host its fifth annual Play4Kay game Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6 pm against Princeton at Lavietes Pavilion. All proceeds from the event benefit the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund. The Crimson will have t-shirts, trivia, promotions and prizes throughout the night.
All fans wearing Pink will receive free admission to the game. Pink t-shirts will be available for a $5 donation in the lobby throughout the game. For every three-point basket Harvard makes, the cheerleaders and dance team will throw out three pink t-shirts into the crowd.
There will be several ways for fans to help support the WBCA Kay Yow Cancer Fund at the game. All proceeds from the Cambridge Trust Bounce 4 Bucks will be designated to the charity, while the winners will receive prizes donated by J.P. Licks. Fans are asked to make a $1 pledge to receive a raffle ticket for a pink basketball used throughout the games’ promotions and signed by the team and coaching staff. Please join the Crimson and help support the fight against breast cancer!
The WBCA Pink Zone is being rebranded as Play 4Kay for February 2012. The mission of the initiative, which was brought to life in 2007, will remain intact: a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative.
The justification behind the rebranding is to keep the story and legacy of Kay Yow at the forefront of everything the Fund commits itself to. Coach Yow's third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006 was the catalyst to the WBCA Pink Zone. Before her passing on January 24, 2009, Coach Yow, along with her teammates the WBCA and The V Foundation, achieved the feat of uniting thousands in the fight against women's cancers and since then the movement continues to grow and change lives each and every year during the month of February.
As we get further and further away from the day Coach Yow left this world for a better one, it is essential for the Fund and its supporters to educate future generations on everything Coach Yow stood for. Each Play 4Kay participant should aspire to view the world through the lens of Coach Yow's spirit. She was an extraordinarily humble and courageous woman who fought a very public battle against breast cancer to build a platform dedicated to improving and extending the lives of cancer patients long after her time here on earth came to a close.
Please help us further Coach Yow's mission by participating in the 2012 Play 4Kay and donating proceeds from your event to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. By donating to the Fund you're allowing the women's basketball community to contribute more funds as a collective whole in support of cancer research. Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common goal. Though teamwork, the women's basketball community may one day hold claim to funding one or several research projects that ultimately lead to a cure for cancer. Join Coach Yow's team and help the Fund eradicate women's cancers!
