I want to give the gift of uniforms to my girls before we compete in March. We have raised $400 through a car wash but are still short 1800.
Hello Friends and Family!
As many of you know, I teach math in a middle school that serves low-income, inner-city students. It has been such a wonderful opportunity. Our kids are wonderful and the school is a blessing to a community where most students don’t have access to a quality education. The challenges are great: 96% of our students live in poverty and most enter PCA several grades behind in academics. I am proud to say that despite the challenges, my school, Phoenix Collegiate Academy, has consistently outperformed area schools in all subjects, has been designated an ‘A’ school for two consecutive years, and was recently named the 2012 Arizona Charter School of the Year! An impressive feat that proves that our students’ backgrounds don’t matter. We show them we care, hold them to high standards, and they deliver!
Last year, I founded the PCA cheer team. We have 22 magnificent young women from 7th-9th grade who earn the privilege to participate by maintaining good grades, demonstrating good behavior, and representing PCA with class. For my girls, cheer helps them to develop character, self-discipline, keeps them academically motivated, and provides them with a crucial extracurricular outlet.
However, because our program is in its infancy, we are still in need of some basic necessities. This year, we aim to raise money in order to purchase uniforms for every participant. Uniforms cost $100 a piece, an amount that is prohibitively expensive for our girls and their families. We recently held a fundraising car wash in which we raised over $400; yet despite our hard work, we are still short of the $2200 we would need to buy each girl a uniform. Despite our shortfall, we have already started cheering for this year's basketball season but I would really like to give my ladies the opportunity to compete proudly in a brand new uniform.
As many of you know, I was heavily involved in cheerleading both in high school and college. Cheer had an incredible impact on me as a person and a student: I learned the value of teamwork, of balancing priorities, and of working hard in the classroom so I could earn the privilege of doing something I loved (thanks, mom and dad!)
Please consider giving to support my cause. No amount is too small.
Thank you so much for your consideration!
