Unique burrowing parrot heavily persecuted
In 2003 biologists working on the Patagonian Conure (Cyanoliseus patagonus) in Argentina contacted the World Parrot Trust when their research was interrupted due to lack of funds. Their presence has protected an enormous cliff-nesting colony of these birds and when they stopped work, poachers seized the opportunity to collect over 1,000 nestlings for the pet trade. WPT further aids in the conservation of these conures by funding:
- research on the species' geographic distribution
- determination of the conservation status of its subspecies in Argentina and Chile
- protection of the largest known parrot colony
- continuing education programme for local people
- preservation of habitat crucial to the species
