PASS' mission is to develop Autauga County youth into productive citizens through intervention, education, and service.
PASS began in 1988 by Prattville High School, Prattville, AL, in memory of Michael Nobles, a senior, who was killed by a drunk driver. In 1996, PASS was adopted by the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerece and the scope of the organization grew to include all the schools in Autauga County. PASS serves the youth and parents of Autauga County by providing the following services: Autauga County Teen Court, two free parenting classes, and free drug testing for Autauga County students in grades 7-12. Teen Court works with the Juvenile Probation office to provide an alternatiive to the court system. Youth who have committed misdemeanors appear before their peers and receive sentencing for their crime. Nine out of ten youth appearing before Teen Court do not commit crimes again. The parenting classes work with both the parents and youth designed to improve parenting skills and giving youth an opportunity to engage in learning how to communicate with their parents. Post tests have reavealed that over 50% of parents and youth have shown improvements in relationships and communication. The Independent Decision Progam (free drug testing) is voluntary and in 2011-2012 school year, 74% of students in grades 7-12 are enrolled in the program. Students are tested upon entry in the program and randomly tested the remainder of the school years. Less than 5% have shown positive test results for illegal drugs and nicotine over the past two years.
