A project of AC PORTLAND
Transforming Communities Through Youth Soccer
It’s the most wonderful time of the year but that also means that 2012 is almost over. Looking back on the year, it is truly unbelievable to see everything that AC Portland has been able to accomplish. Let me share some of the organizational wins we have had. By the beginning of June, we had successfully completed our first full year of after school programming. We served over 400 students at eight elementary schools in the Portland area. In June, I took over as the Executive Director and helped to establish a board of directors, worked with our board chair to apply and successfully receive our 501c3 tax status from the federal government and successfully won our first grant from the Portland Timbers Community Fund. As an organization, we are proving that we have the capacity to grow and be trusted to operate two national programs, US Soccer Foundation’s Soccer For Success and America SCORES, here at the local level.
I hope that you took the time to read some of the success stories our students are having by participating in our program. In the end, that is truly the most important piece of AC Portland and reason we do what we do. Hearing students say, “This is the first time I’ve ever been on a team” and “This is the first uniform I’ve owned” makes it all worth it. Sport can be a catalyst for social change and AC Portland is living proof.
There is no shortage of amazing non-profits doing good work in Portland and all over the country. AC Portland, however, is unique in our holistic approach to what we provide our students and our creative way to deliver our program in a sustainable way. By partnering with amazing organizations like Impact NW, Lifeworks NW, Metropolitan Family Services and Neighborhood house; AC Portland is able to deliver our programs to more students, at more schools for roughly half the cost. Our programs encompass structured physical activity, nutrition education, mentorship, creative writing, and service learning at no cost to the families. This comprehensive approach is unique in that we aren’t just playing sport for sport sake, we are using the worlds’ most popular sport to do what it does best, bring people together. Our vision is to transform communities through youth soccer and the power of the ball can do just that.
AC Portland needs your support this holiday season to continue to serve the current 400+ kids and families that we work with but also to expand in 2013. I hope you will consider making a gift donation today. Your donation of any size will make a real difference.
Thank you and have a wonderful holiday.
