Dr. Bill LaSalle and I to Nicaragua to provide hand surgery and therapy to less fortunate population and training to staff at Militar Hosp.
I have the unique opportunity and honor to travel with hand surgeon Dr. Bill LaSalle to provide hand surgery and therapy services to many of those less fortunate in Managua, Nicaragua. Throughout my career as an Occupational Therapist I have dreamed of being able to give back and serve in such a capacity. I have had the most fortunate blessing to have been mentored by and trained by some of the finest hand surgeons and therapist in the country and some international.
Dr. LaSalle and I will travel at our own expense to Managua Jan 26-Feb 2, 2013 through Health Volunteers Overseas. Dr. LaSalle and another hand therapist started this hand program training years ago and he has been on numerous trips there over the years. We will be providing hand surgery and therapy to patients in the Managua area as well as training the surgeons and therapists that are on site at Militar Hospital. Although I know some Spanish, I have been informed that I will be provided with a translator as well as armed escort to and from the hospital. The escort is mandatory as part of the trip.
Health Volunteers Overseas provides the opportunity, but all expenses incurred for the travel and trip remain our responsibility. I will be taking a week of vacation from my responsibilities at Northside Hospital to allow me to take this trip.
Your prayers for our safety and success are coveted and if you feel led to assist me in my out of pocket expenses you can be assured your dollars are going for a worthy and needed cause.
