Summer Search develops leaders from low income backgrounds. I am one of them. Help me pay it forward and raise funds for One More Leader.
The ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do. - Steve Jobs
Back in 1997, I was a smart college bound high school junior with aspirations -- and fear. It was a paralyzing fear of not being good enough to make a dent in the world because I was not coming from the best school or growing up low income. Jesse Jackson and LL Cool J came to our school to speak but they were just passing through trying to inspire us since our school lost its accreditation. I feared that many of things that society said about where I went to school and my neighborhood limiting my potential were true.
I got an opportunity to find out my real potential on a summer experience with Deer Hill Expeditions. They provide community service and hiking trips for youth. I was there on scholarship and everyone else's parents had money. Chelsea Clinton did it the year before. It was intimidating. My dad drove a cab and mom was a nurse's aid. Funny thing happened on the trip though, I found that the 9 other teens on the trip had paralyzing fear too. They masked it via alcohol, not speaking, and all kinds of dangerous stuff.
We could not stand each other while hiking. We got to a point where our trip leaders stopped at the base of a mountain and we sat in a circle. I proceded to tell everyone this trip was a once in a lifetime opporutnity for me and gave the greatest speech I ever gave. We magically got refocused and had a great time from then on.
Among strangers, in an unfamiliar place I was able to find the truth about my leadership potential. That is the search part of Summer Search. It was an experience helped overcome my paralyzing fear. Now I pay the lessons I learned forward by running my own organization mentoring young people.
My story is just one of many promising leaders that got a chance to find out the truth about who they are through summer experiences and mentoring.
Please help me raise funds for at least "One More Leader".
Maybe if we are crazy enough, we can change the world - one leader at a time.
