At Habitat we have found that making a difference in a family’s life involves a significant investment in simple, decent and affordable housing. Helping a family get out of substandard housing and into an affordable, energy efficient home makes a long lasting impact on their life.

Habitat for Humanity is making a difference one family at a time. 52 families in 14 communities throughout North St. Louis County have been given a hand up into affordable housing. This next year we are planning to build or remodel five more homes in partnership with five deserving families in need.

I want to make you aware of a special need we have this year in serving families with children who are physically challenged. This year we already have three families selected with a disabled child and one with some special medical challenges. It is a great privilege and pleasure to meet the needs of these families.

Our need is this, it cost between $2,000 and $3,000 above our normal budget for a home to equip it with wheelchair access sidewalks, wider doors, bathroom and kitchen, etc. We are asking you to come along side these families by making a contribution that will enable us to meet their needs.

This year we need to raise $21,000 by year end to be able to help all of our families; including the extra needs of these families.

Affordable housing makes a difference for children who now have a permanent home, providing a warm and safe place to sleep. They no longer have to constantly struggle to make new friends and adapt to a new school. They now have a permanent place to bring friends and a yard to play in. Many more will graduate from high school and attend college because they have a place to do their homework. IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Safe affordable housing helps alleviate financial pressures for parents, and gives them the satisfaction of providing adequate housing for their families. The stress of having to move their family around, because of rising rent and heating costs or mold and pest problems is eliminated. They are able to be better employees, be more productive and earn more promotions. Opportunities grow to become involved in their children’s school and be active in their church and community.

How does Habitat work?

Partner families must qualify for Habitat’s interest free, 30 year mortgage and make a $400 down payment. Each partner family is required to attend home ownership classes and to invest a minimum of 300 hours of “sweat equity” into building their home or other Habitat activities.

In addition to the families sweat equity hours 150-200 community volunteers provide another 1,500 - 2000 hours to complete each house. 100% of our homeowner’s monthly mortgage payments are reinvested to build more homes in North St. Louis County. And last year 93 cents of every dollar raised went to building homes.

Habitat works through dedicated volunteers, tax-deductable contributions and by partnering with churches, businesses, civic groups and government programs to build hope in partner families and the community. Habitat International celebrated the completion of the 500,000th home in the U.S. and around the world in October 2011. We need your help to reach the milestone of building affordable homes with 50 families in North St. Louis County in 2012! In addition to building homes in our communities, North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity contributes 10% of its undesignated income as part of its goal to end poverty housing world wide. These funds have built 48 homes in Mexico and other parts of the world in desperate need of housing.
