The UF and NCSU chapters will work with Casa del Alfarero to support the community in starting a jewelry business.

What is The Challenge/ Issue at hand?

In the heart of the capital city in Guatemala lies the garbage dump that 11,000 people call home; 6,400 of these are children. Called “scavengers,” they work in the garbage, searching for things of value that can be recycled.

How Will Our Project Tackle the Challenge/ Issue?

By laying out the foundations of a simple and sustainable business we will work with Casa del Alfarero to teach business skills that will provide the people with the means to support their families. We will provide funds to launch a jewelry business and we will also share computer skills so the business can bring in online sales.

What Will be The Long Term Impact of this Project?

The development of a business that the people in the community are interested and invested in will encourage self-sufficiency through business. The collaborative project will also provide an opportunity for community members to come together as we join them in our shared vision for a better future.

Our Vision:

That one day not one person will scavenge in all of Guatemala.

Our Mission:

To provide holistic opportunities for scavenger families by equipping them to develop themselves and transform their lives, families, and community.
