While Maryland is a pro-choice state, the right to choose is not always a reality. Consider the following facts:

1. So-called crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) outnumber legitimate health care providers by 3:1. To the best of our knowledge, there are over 60 CPCs and only about 20 family planning clinics.
2. In 2006, 75,000 Maryland residents had an unintended pregnancy, a rate of 63 per 1,000 women aged 15–44. Births resulting from these unintended pregnancies cost the state and federal governments $188 million that year. (Guttmacher Institute)
3. In April 2011 the anti-choice organizations Operation Rescue and Maryland Coalition for Life opened an office directly across the street from an abortion clinic in Germantown, Maryland. For months, anti-choice protesters have demonstrated in Germantown, disrupting both patients and clinic employees as they enter the clinic.
4. In 2009, there were 2 anti-choice bills introduced before the Maryland General Assembly. That number increased to 3 in 2010 and 11 in 2011. This is an unprecedented number for the state of Maryland.
