We help make MN a great place to make new, original music through mentoring for youth, and professional services for emerging artists.
MusicWorks Minnesota (MWM) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization providing tools and opportunities to create new, original classical, jazz and popular music. For young musicians, the focus is on education, inspiration, and opportunity to explore the art of writing music. For emerging writers, the focus is on professional development, networking and performance. These activities are really two sides of the same coin: teaching the art of songwriting and supporting the careers of songwriters are equally important to creating a cultural legacy of high quality music writing.
MWM was founded in 2011 through the efforts of TeamWorks International Inc., a for-profit strategic change and leadership development consulting firm founded in 1995. In 2011 programs provided donated instruments and instruction to students in need. While these were worthwhile goals, the board recognized that other nonprofits fill that need with greater efficiency. They also recognized that while music performance were supported in the community, music composition and songwriting programs were not. This led to a change in focus and programming in early 2013, and the success of the programs made it clear that the new direction was a good fit for the organization and the community it serves.
To serve the community of student/emerging composers and songwriters in MN well, MWM realized that it must make a long term commitment to deliver ongoing high quality arts programming. Currently, MWM provides educational workshops, contests, mentoring, and professional services. MWM plans to build on its programs each year: maintaining a relationship with students, supporting them as they begin their careers, and engaging them to become instructors to future MWM students. This vision of service, developing and supporting great music writing support system over time, is what distinguishes MWM from other organizations.
