Motionpoems broadens the audience for poetry by turning great contemporary poems into short films.
"I want to make the world more beautiful," an intern candidate told us recently. "That's why I want to work for Motionpoems."
Five years ago, Minneapolis video artist Angella Kassube attended one of poet Todd Boss's poetry readings and said, "I want to animate one of your poems." The rest is history ...
Let's face it: Contemporary poetry is a mystery to most casual readers. They rarely read it, and would have a hard time discovering great new poetry on their own.
We think that's a shame! So...
MOTIONPOEMS subverts that paradigm by giving casual readers a new way to discover poems ... as short films! That way, they can be distributed virally and on YouTube, in social networks, in classrooms, and in broadcast and film media.
Where do we get our poems? From some of the nation's most respected publishers! Our 2014 season partners include Copper Canyon Press, Graywolf Press, Milkweed Editions, FSG, Wave Books, McSweeney's, American Poetry Review, Tin House, The Believer, Alaska Quarterly Review, Iowa Review, and Scribner's Best American Poetry anthology.
MOTIONPOEMS was co-founded in 2008 by Todd Boss (poet) and Angella Kassube (artist, animator, artistic director, and producer). Since 2008, we've paired filmmakers with over 40 poets including Mark Strand, Thomas Lux, Erin Belieu, Robert Bly, Jane Hirshfield, Marvin Bell and more.
You will be STUNNED at the level of professionalism and creativity our video artists bring to their work. See more at http://www.motionpoems.com.
These are fully-realized, artist-driven cinematic adaptations of poems ... as scripts!
WE NEED YOUR HELP! We want to continue paying a SMALL STIPEND to our technical and video artists. Many of them are putting more than 100 hours into these projects, outside of the 40-hour work week! We want to reward them for their passion, their creativity, and their willingness to take an artistic risk. Our video artists are our greatest asset, a key to our growing success. We'd like to show them that our viewers value their contributions to MOTIONPOEMS.
But we can't do it alone. We need your help.
Your support means a lot to us. Thanks.
