The mission of MADD is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. Due to the efforts of volunteers and staff tirelessly working to achieve MADD's mission, more than 300,000 Americans are alive who would have otherwise been killed had drunk driving been allowed to continue at the epidemic levels of 1980. Although alcohol-related traffic deaths have decreased by more than 50 percent since MADD's founding, drunk driving remains the nation's most frequently committed violent crime. In 2011, there were 9,878 deaths due to drunk-driving crashes, which is 1 person every 53 minutes. Underage drinking remains the No. 1 youth drug problem, killing more young people that all other illicit drugs combined.

1. Public Awareness Campaigns MADD's longest running and most popular public awareness campaign is Tie One On For Safety (TOOFS), which asks motorist to tie a red ribbon to their vehicle as a pledge to drive safe and sober throughout the holiday season. 2. Victim Services. Although MADD is widely recognized for its public awareness programs and legislative efforts, the organization is also one of the largest crime victim assistance organization in the world according to the federal government. MADD provides emotional support to victims as well as valuable information such as how the criminal justice system works and how to apply for Crime Victims Compensation funds. Trained Victim Advocates also supply a list of referrals such as professional counselors, civil attorneys, and clergy who are skilled at working with crash victims. 3. Underage drinking prevention Programs. Through MADD programs, youth are helping change the societal environment that often accepts underage drinking as a "rite of passage." These programs include Power of Parents, Power of Youth, Power of Community, Protecting You/Protecting Me, a science-based elementary curriculum, MADD Youth In Action teams, and MADD's Youth Leadership Power Camps. To address the alarming scope of underage and high-risk drinking on college campuses, MADD launched UMADD, a chapter initiative that activates student leaders to work toward eliminating underage and high-risk drinking on college campuses.
