Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota was created to fulfill a legacy that began with the first historical statewide "Get out the Native Vote" campaign in 2004. The campaign was successful and was recognized nationally. The campaign initiated a statewide strategy that was utilized by tribe's in Minnesota to engage, mobile, and empower their constituents to exercise their voting rights.

It is the mission to empower and Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota has seen success with its Chairwoman, Elizabeth Towle, member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Elizabeth Towle began coming to meeting with her grandmother who was an originating "GOTNV" team member. Native culture permitted Elizabeth, who at the time was barely eighteen years old, to join in conversations, develop strategies, identify solutions, and implement them.

Today, Elizabeth Towle is a young adult whose career has begun in a world of public policy and education of the importance of the Native vote and the unified Native voice. Elizabeth is the moderator of the first educational video produced in 2005. The video is used to educate in a classroom setting with Native youth actors in the production being reflective of the students.

When reflecting on her progress from bystander to doer, Elizabeth states "When I was in high school the last thing on my mind was voter engagement, now today, I listen to MPR all the time to keep abreast of what's going on in the world and I make the connection between the world and my Native American community."

Elizabeth is one of many Native Americans in rural Minnesota who have been intrigued by Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota and have been engaged to the point of taking steps to a leadership role. Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota has thus far in its short history, conducted three "Get out the Native Vote" campaigns, where Native Americans residing on Indian reservations are provided the organizer and canvasser training and the opportunity to move their learned techniques to the field through door-knocking in their own communities. Each Indian reservation engaged with Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota maintains trained organizer and canvassers for future non-partisan electoral work.

Work in 2010 include

1. The "Get out the Native Vote" campaign that includes, voter registration drives, candidate forums in Native American communities, Precinct caucus and election protection trainings, and election day activities.
2. Cultural sensitivity training for election judges in rural Minnesota.
3. New in 2010 - Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota applies the "Minnesota Model" to the 2010 Census campaign.
4. New in 2010 is the first annual Youth Civic Camp. The camp will be held two weeks during the summer and made available to Native youth ages 13 to 15 years old. The focus of the camp is to instill in youth the significance of Native Americans and public policy through accurate history lessons of Ojibwe and Lakota/Dakota heritage in Minnesota, inspire youth to think about the future with lessons of renewable energy and localized farming, including daily exercise, and spiritual lessons important to youth of teen years.
5. New in 2010 is the first "Get out the Native Vote" campaign for tribal elections. Native Vote Alliance of Minnesota will engage, mobilize and empower Native Americans to increase their voter participation with tribal elections.
