This coming March, I will be going with an Operation Rainbow team to Port au Prince, Haiti to provide free orthopedic surgery for children and adults. This will be the teams fourth trip to this location, since the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, which killed over 250,000 Haitians. They were there in June of 2010, 2011, and 2012, and now are preparing for our return mission in March 2013.

The needs in Haiti are tremendous. The team typically provides 30-45 surgical procedures in a week. Most of the patients now are poor children, with birth defects such as clubfoot, cerebral palsy, and other orthopedic problems. Due to poverty and lack of resources, most present in th advanced stages of their conditions, neglected, and untreated. This creates challenges, but we do our best to provide safe, state of the art, orthopedic surgery by bringing down a team of skilled nurses, technicians, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. We will be work along side a local orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Francel Alexis, who also provides the follow-up care after we leave Haiti.

My job while in Haiti will be to do recoveries of patient after surgery, and give an inservice on Pediatric and post recovery Assessments.

It is expensive to mount these missions, as we must bring all our equipment, surgical gear, O.R. drapes, medications, and even nutritional supplements for the patients.
