Minnesota Museum of American Art
A US registered nonprofit
This is a very exciting time for the Minnesota Museum of American Art (MMAA), full of challenges and – more importantly – opportunities. In January of 2009 the building where our permanent collection was housed was redeveloped by Ramsey County resulting in the closing of MMAA’s gallery. Since then, members of the Board of Trustees have used the time to examine MMAA’s vision and explore how we can better serve Saint Paul and continue to be one of our state’s great destinations.
Much of the focus has been on finding a permanent site that will be the right fit for our wonderful collection. The Board of Trustees has been researching a couple of sites in particular and is encouraged by the possibilities that these spaces may offer.
In June the Board of Trustees hired a new Executive Director, Kristin Makholm, who is currently working with other institutions and community members to create programming and events that will bring parts of the collection out to the public.
Your support now is critical to preserve MMAA's tradition as Minnesota’s only museum focused on American Art with innovative exhibitions, creative educational programs for children and adults, and a wonderful collection that includes:
● Nationally recognized collection of works by Saint Paul born sculptor Paul Manship and Native American artist George Morrison;
● Strong representations in early to mid-20th Century American art including works by the Ashcan School, Thomas Hart Benton, and Joan Mitchell;
● Significant holdings in American studio craft from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s.
The continued support of our friends and community members will make this transition successful.
