Minneapolis Police Department Bike Patrol Program
A project of MINNEAPOLIS SAFEZONE COLLABORATIVE
The Minneapolis Police Department has one hundred and fifty police officers who have been trained to participate in bike patrol activities. These officers work in all the five police precincts and they use the police bikes during uniform patrol functions, mostly on a part time basis. The Minneapolis Police Department has approximately 125 police bikes assigned throughout the city. Bike patrol allows officers to patrol all areas of the city, they can respond quickly as needed and they enable the officers to have one on one contact with the people living, working and visiting the city. A high level of training and professionalism within the bike patrol program is the goal, and community based police response is a natural outcome.
The Minneapolis Police Department also has Bicycle Rapid Response Teams. The officers on these teams have been highly trained in specific crowd control activities while on bike patrol. These teams can be deployed to assist with parades, concerts, park events and civil disturbances. Bike patrol training officers from Minneapolis and St. Paul developed this program and the officers are now providing this training to police officers from all over the country.
The Minneapolis Bike Patrol Program are in the need of public training resources, tools, bike parts and bike safety supplies.
