If you know anything about Tomorrow's Rainbow, then you know that it is an exceptional little charity with a whole lot of heart that fills a tremendous void in our community. The Tomorrow's Rainbow miniature horse farm, located in Coconut Creek, FL, has been an oasis for grieving children, teens and adults for over seven years, helping to guide them toward a more joyful future. “Miles of Memoirs” is a celebration of the love and resilience in all of us and is the brainchild of Chuck Schwabe.
Chuck Schwabe has been an avid bike rider for all of his life. For his 50th birthday, he decided to fulfill a dream of riding the length of the State of Florida - 575 miles from Key West to Fernando Beach! Chuck's plans came to a screeching halt when Donna, his wife of 32 years, was diagnosed with breast cancer. For the next 6 years Chuck's attention remained focused on Donna's health and recovery as she endured countless chemotherapy treatments, life threatening leukemia and a then radical stem cell transplant. Donna's health and raising their 3 daughters became Chuck's world - the bike ride would have to remain a dream. Donna lost her battle with cancer and died in May 2006. The grieving process for Chuck and his daughters was long, lonely, and difficult.
Chuck was blessed for a second time when he met Dr. Judith L. Kolva, the founder of Memoir Shoppe. As their love blossomed, Chuck learned through Judith's work of preserving life stories through written heirloom books, the value of stories. It was time for Chuck to rekindle his dream. Could there be a better way to honor Donna’s life? His story was unfolding, but one piece of the puzzle was still missing -- an organization that could benefit from his journey. Enter Tomorrow's Rainbow!
When Chuck and Judith learned about Tomorrow's Rainbow in 2009, they became instant supporters and volunteers. The mission: providing a special place for children that have experienced the death of a loved one. By incorporating miniature horse interactions with therapeutic play areas and facilitated peer support, children are given the tools necessary to take their own personal grief journey in a way that is meaningful to them. Tomorrow's Rainbow is a safe place where children feel, often for the first time, understood. Chuck knew that his children could have benefited immeasurably from the programs offered at Tomorrow’s Rainbow.
Chuck—the rider; Memoir Shoppe—passionate about preserving stories, and Tomorrow’s Rainbow—dedicated to helping families through their most trying times. All the puzzle pieces came together to make “Miles for Memoirs” a reality.
The next chapter in Chuck's story was to begin on May 30, 2012, but was halted a day earlier due to health reasons. Unwaivered by this detour, Chuck made plans for exactly one year later and will continue on May 1, 2013 in Key West. Nine days later he will end in Fernando Beach, with stops in Marathon, Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter, Sebastian, Titusville, Flagler Beach, and Vedra Beach planned -- 65+ miles per day for nine days. You can be part of the “Miles for Memoirs” story by honoring a special family member or memorializing a loved one now gone by sponsoring one or more miles.
