Rewarding merit among Cambodian youth through academic and sports scholarships.
Sopaht Johnson
Program Director
For the right student, even a small amount of funds in can make a dramatic difference in their future. For example, the mother of one poor but very bright young girl scaped to support her fees through high school. But afterwards, one year later, this girl could not find work or afford to go on to univerity. The project identified and awarded her a $2000 scholarship to pay for 4 years tuition at a very good private university in Cambodia. After graduating, she received a good job in the tourism industry, and has been able to care for her and her elderly mother. She has worked her way up in the business, has had many unique opportunities as a result of working there, and has been a mentor for others. Without this opportunity, her great potential would not have been realized.
In present day Cambodia, those born with the right family connections and or with enough money can have anything. For most poor family, especially, farmers, if they sale all the rice they harvest, they would get less than a few hundred dollars.
With Your Gift of $2000 = you give complete tuition for higher education and opportunity for life to one person; and for her family as well. Without your, chance for this one person and her family to get out of poverity would be far away even in her dream.
Our scholarship program renews concepts of merit and achievement in selecting deserving students hungry to learn, achieve and contribute to Cambodia’s future. Moreover, it will teach that there are other possibilities for how a society can function in the future.
The opportunity to access higher education for deserving students not only creates self-sufficient adults, but also develops future citizens of Cambodia with a sense of larger purpose and societal consciousness. The Project destributes 2 kind of scholarships.
1. Scholarships will be for academic potential and industriousness, motivating young woman to strive for success and achievement in their chosen field. Recipients will need to report regularly on their progress during school. After school is completed, they will need to demonstrate good citizenship by helping others via mentorship, skill-building, or providing internships at their place of work.
2. Scholarship program encourages women’s pursuit of excellence in athletics. Women in Cambodia have few opportunities of athletic activities. Research from other countries has demonstrated the positive effects on self-esteem and future success among women involved in sustained athletic endeavors, including delaying marriage until school has been completed. This scholarship will identify and support women with athletic potential, encouraging them to pursue sports as a means for gaining leadership skills and self-confidence.
