"Men Nan Men" is Creole for "hand in hand." Help me get to Haiti to work men nan men with the people of this hopeful country.
I first served with Foundation For Peace (FFP) when I went on my first mission trip to Haiti in February of 2012. It was one of the most inspiring and life-changing experiences I’ve ever had. The people I encountered still had this hope, joy, and unwavering faith in God about them despite the adversities and devastation they had faced. They are so proud to be Haitian and want to rebuild their country, to build a brighter future.
I met a young man while I was in Haiti who said to me "Most Haitians die with their dreams inside their hearts. They don't get the chance to realize their dreams." This is one of the reasons I so firmly believe in Foundation for Peace and all the work they do in Haiti. The foundation believes in developing long-term sustainable programs that will help create new opportunities. Their mission is to work hand in hand with the people in the communities to help evaluate their needs and to help them make these dreams a reality.
In the community of Ganthier in Eastern Haiti, there was a desire to have a professional school to serve the economic needs of the region. The local government in Ganthier provided five acres of land for this educational complex. From there and with the help of FFP, the vision for “Complexe Educatif Men Nan Men” was born. This educational complex at its completion will include classrooms for linguistics and vocational schools, a cafeteria, a community center, a chapel and even an internet café. FFP has committed to help bring this project to fruition and with the help of many community member volunteers and countless groups from the US, the first floor of the first building in the educational complex was completed in October 2012.
I am proud to say I was part of one of those teams that contributed to the completion of the language school. After months of praying and talking this over with friends and family, I have decided to go back to Haiti for six months to teach at the same school I had a hand in building. As an intern with FFP, I will also be working closely with the communities the school will help to benefit, as well as acting as an ambassador to the various groups that come to volunteer with the foundation and contribute to the project in Ganthier. My personal mission is not only an extension of FFP’s ultimate mission, but also to remain open to all the different experiences that will come my way and to be able to leverage any other resources to make "Men Nan Men" a reality. I am excited to be a part of this organization, who at its core is creating hope for the future.
How can YOU be a part of this journey?? With your help I need to raise $6,000. Your contributions will help to get me to Haiti, provide a roof over my head, food in my belly, transportation, and health insurance. Any little bit helps.
Don’t forget to follow me along the way!
