Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,
As many of you know, George and I will be running the Boston Marathon in just a little over 10 weeks from now. The training experience so far has been both amazing and humbling, and I am feeling back to normal this week after amping up my mileage too quickly. This will be my first marathon and my return to running after a few years off for child rearing and school.
My decision to run this marathon was sparked by the opportunity to raise money for an incredible, young non-profit in Massachusetts called Dream Big! Dream Big! is a charity that provides low-income and homeless girls with grants that pay for sports equipment, uniforms, athletic footwear, program fees, training expenses, summer programs, and whatever else that they need to participate in physical activity.
Many of you are aware that I have recently finished my course work in nutrition, and have started my career as a registered dietitian working at Brookside Community Health Center in Boston. My true passion is working with women from the age of infancy through late adulthood around healthy eating and physical activity. At this time, more than one third of all children in the United States are overweight or obese. We now know that the majority of our fat cells are obtained during puberty, which is why overweight and obese adolescents are more likely to struggle with their weight for their entire lives, and are more likely to develop type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and bone and joint problems as adults. These are just a few of the reasons that it is so important for girls to have access to physical activity at a young age and to learn those fitness skills that will carry them through their entire lives.
Providing girls with the equipment or program fees that they need to participate in sports and dance is an easy way to put them on their way to life long healthy habits. The money that you help me raise will help to impact thousands of girls this year. The idea that my run could help provide equipment grants for countless pairs of basketball sneakers, or outfit an entire team in cleats and shin guards, or even provide that single scholarship for summer sports camp, is what will serve as my motivation throughout the last 3 months of training and ultimately on that 26.2 mile run from Hopkinton to Boston.
My personal goal is to raise $4,000 for Dream Big!. As one of the newest Boston Athletic Association Marathon Charities, our team of 15 Dream Big! runners is hoping to raise over $75,000 cumatively for this amazing cause. To date, we have raised over $32,000 towards our goal. I am extremely thankful for this opportunity, and hope you will join me through your donation in supporting Dream Big! For those of you who are local, George and I will be hosting a Mile 16 Barbecue (NC style) on March 8th at the church to support Dream Big!
