More than 50% of the students in Manchester, NH live at some level of poverty. These are students that show up at school with inadequate support to manage and move forward with their lives. They show up hungry every morning, and consume twice as much on Monday mornings as many of them have barely eaten over the weekend. Most dress poorly because it is all they have to wear. As a society, we can’t expect them to show up, sit at a desk, and perform at the level they need to succeed in life. They don’t have the resources to make this work. We need to mold an educational structure to each student’s needs and interests instead of fitting students into a traditional non-customized approach. Granite State Independent Living’s (GSIL’s) Earn & Learn Opportunities program does exactly this in order to help these at-risk students realize their hopes and dreams.

You can help student’s like:

  • Jordan. Jordan was “at-risk” of dropping out of high school when she was referred to GSIL. When she graduated from the program, Jordan stated “we can all say throughout the past months we have learned more about ourselves, and who we are, more about our goals for the future and who we want to be. Thank you GSIL”.
  • Doug, who says “the reason I am so thankful is because before GSIL, I have never finished a program, but they pushed me to my full potential and I completed it. I never had the guts to step up and speak in front of a crowd, but thanks to them, I stand up here before all of you conquering my fear and feeling proud of myself”.
  • Or Patrick, whose parents and teacher’s report “he has made a complete turnaround since his graduation from the Earn and Learn program. Today Patrick is a proud young man who knows what he wants for his future, has set goals and is determined to reach them”.

The power that this experience brings to students' learning and the contribution to their real world understanding is remarkable. Due to the relevance to each student's life, passion and interest, students are often, for the first time, able to make the connections between academic/school requirements and their hopes and dreams for the future.
